UK Power Networks and Cadent describe separate arrangements for alterations to their electricity and gas connections. [1] [2]
Separate the electricity connection from the meter
UK Power Networks explains that it can move the incoming electricity supply equipment, while the electricity supplier deals with the billing meter. An electrician deals with the customer’s electrical installation. A proposal described simply as “move the meter” therefore needs a coordinated scope rather than one assumed appointment. [1]
Ask the relevant organisations to confirm the proposed location and responsibilities before ordering a cupboard or closing a wall. Record who disconnects, who reconnects and what must be ready for each visit. These are project-specific coordination questions; the fact that one appointment has been booked does not establish that all the other work is included.
Discuss gas changes with the network
Cadent’s meter-moving service requires details of the current arrangement and the proposed move so it can establish the necessary work. Moving the gas service is not the same as casually extending internal pipework during a kitchen installation. Obtain the network’s scope and identify any separate reconnection work and appointments. [2]
The operator must be checked for the address. Use the provider’s written requirements to inform the design rather than copying a meter position from another project.
Arrange temporary construction power
UK Power Networks has a process for temporary electricity connections. This can involve a prepared connection location and equipment for the temporary supply, alongside metering arrangements. Ask whether the connection will later be retained, altered or removed when the permanent building is ready. [3]
For the pre-start checklist, request a drawing showing the connection point and a responsibility list covering the enclosure, cable route, preparatory works, meter and final changeover. Ask for the quoted scope and any exclusions to be attached to the construction programme. Do not substitute a general supplier lead time for a confirmed project booking.
Check the construction-water arrangement
Thames Water asks customers to arrange water for building work appropriately and describes metered supplies for construction. Contact it before using or altering a connection for the project, especially where a new connection is required. Its requirements are separate from the builder’s installation of plumbing inside the property. [4]
Keep network quotations, approvals, account details and connection records in the handover file. Before removing a temporary supply, confirm that the permanent service has been installed and commissioned and that the responsible provider has agreed the changeover.
